Task

Students design an ebook to introduce their weekly activities

About the unit

This ebook task is an extension of the textbook chapter "Free time". Students have learnt the days of the week and how to use the simple present tense to describe weekly activities (e.g. "I visit my grandparents on Sundays."). This task provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of the target grammar structure in a creative and meaningful way.

Prior knowledge

Students have learnt the basic functions of Book Creator.

Learning objectives

By the end of the unit, students will be able to…

  • plan and create an ebook about their weekly activities

  • write sentences using the correct structure to describe their weekly activities

  • add relevant images, audio recordings, and videos to support their writing

  • use the assessment criteria to give constructive feedback to their peers

  • reflect on the ebook creation process to identify strengths and areas for improvement

Unit Plan

Pre-class

Activating prior knowledge

  • Ss recall what they do during the week and record these activities on a worksheet.

Ss write about a different number of days.


More able: 7 days

Average: 5 days

Less able: 3 days

Plan

Revisiting Book Creator functions

  • T revisits the functions of Book Creator with the class.

 

Understanding assessment criteria

  • T presents two ebook examples and facilitates discussions by asking questions such as ‘Which ebook is better or easier to read? Why?’

  • T introduces the assessment task and explains the assessment criteria using examples.

eBook planning and feedback

  • T demonstrates how to plan an ebook.

  • Ss plan their own ebooks using an ebook planner

  • T invites some Ss to share their ebook planners for peer and teacher feedback.

Lessons 3-6

Designing and feedback

  • T revisits the assessment criteria with the class.

  • Ss design their ebooks part by part.

  • T invites Ss to share their ebooks for peer and teacher feedback.​

Lesson 7

Self- and peer assessment

  • T revisits the assessment criteria with the class and demonstrates how to complete the assessment form.

  • Ss read their own ebooks and complete the ‘self’ column of the assessment form.

  • Ss pair up. They read each other’s ebooks and complete the ‘peer’ column of the assessment form. 

  • Ss revise their ebooks based on peer feedback.

  • Elicit the assessment criteria from Ss by guiding them to compare a good and a bad ebook example.

  • Explain the criteria using simple language.
